In this captivating episode of the Enkundleni Exclusive Podcast, we sit down with the incomparable Zanele Maseko, affectionately known as Ma Z. A renowned traditional dancer and actress, Ma Z shares her remarkable journey, from humble beginnings in Mpopoma, Bulawayo, to becoming a legend in her field.

Born the 11th of 12 children, Ma Z's love affair with dance began at primary school. Although her parents viewed her passion as merely an extracurricular activity, Ma Z's dedication and perseverance eventually led her to venture professionally in 2001 with the Vukani crew. Her subsequent move to Hloseni in 2001 marked the beginning of an extraordinary 24-year journey with the group.

When asked if she underestimates herself, Ma Z humbly responds that she prefers to receive applause from others rather than praising herself. However, she graciously acknowledges and embraces her status as a legend in the traditional dance scene, recognizing the significant impact she has had on the industry.

As a mother of three, Ma Z shares her approach to nurturing her children's creative interests. While one of her sons explores art, Ma Z adopts a supportive role, neither hindering nor forcing his passion, but instead providing a guiding presence.

Ma Z reflects on the changes in the traditional dance landscape, noting that before 2015, the industry was more stable. However, the current market is flooded with "cheap" dancers, making it challenging for seasoned professionals like herself to sustain a steady income. Despite this, Ma Z remains committed to her craft, emphasizing the importance of valuing art and its practitioners.

Through her conversation with Enkundleni Exclusive Podcast, Ma Z leaves an indelible mark, showcasing her resilience, dedication, and passion for traditional dance. As a legend in her own right, Ma Z continues to inspire future generations, cementing her place in the annals of Zimbabwean cultural heritage.
