A sorrowful Monday morning dawned with the heartbreaking news of the passing of veteran arts icon Litshe. After battling health challenges in recent days, Litshe had given hope to those close to him by appearing at Umkhathi Theatre Works’ rehearsal space in Njube on Friday, followed by working on a film set on Saturday. His presence reassured those around him, but his sudden death left everyone in shock.

His passing sent ripples of grief throughout Bulawayo, as the arts community mourned the loss of a remarkable figure whose legacy spanned dance, music, theatre, and film. Both on and offline, tributes flowed in, with newspapers dedicating heartfelt articles to a life devoted to the creative arts. By Monday evening, friends, colleagues, and neighbors had gathered at his family home in Emakhandeni to pay their respects, celebrating his immense contributions.

Members of the renowned Umkhathi Theatre Works, where Litshe played a vital role, spoke of his dedication and humility. Director Matesu Dube described him as the glue that held the group together, highlighting the loss of a devoted team member who followed instructions to perfection. “Death has robbed us of a dedicated cadre,” Dube said.

Born Ishmael Muvingi in 1978, Litshe was raised in Emakhandeni, Bulawayo. He attended Robert Tredgold Primary School and later Milton High School, where he graduated in 1992. A passionate rugby player, he was nicknamed “Stone” due to the round, heavy shape of his head. This nickname evolved into his stage name, Litshe, which means “stone” in IsiNdebele.

His artistic journey began in 1994 when he joined Sadalala Amajekete before transitioning to Umkhathi Theatre Works, where he embarked on his first international tour a decade later, attending the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland.

In 2006, Litshe toured with Siyaya Arts, spending nine years performing across Europe and Asia. In 2016, he formed the group “A Band with No Name” and later pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album Mix Masala in 2022. He was honored with the Roil Bulawayo Arts Award for Outstanding Theatre Actor in 2018.

Mourners are gathered at 3011 Emakhandeni, near Mawunga shops, to celebrate his life.
